Christmas Hamper Appeal
Many of the families we work with really struggle to survive financially. The Christmas period is always a time of both happiness and intense pressure and stress for our families and young people. Challenge 2000 fortunately receives Christmas Hampers from the St Vincent de Paul Society and the Wellington City Mission which we deliver on 23rd/24th December.
While these hampers are full of Christmas goodies, they do not include meat, vegetables and fruit. With your help, we can add these to hampers. Please spread the Christmas message of love by helping us to help others. Please donate $12 for a frozen chicken, $20 meat pack, $50 for a small Christmas Ham or $80 for fresh fruit and vegetables for a family of five children.
So please if you can either post a cheque to Challenge 2000, P O Box 13059, Johnsonville or direct credit to Challenge 2000: ANZ 01-0519-0057660-00 reference Christmas Food.
All amounts are tax deductible as we are a registered charity. Thank you for helping us to make a difference. For further information, please call Trish or John on 04 477 6827.
Holiday Programmes
On a stunning sunshining Tuesday morning we waited in anticipation to start the first holiday programme in Wairarapa. It was a fun filled day!! We made a variety of pizzas – heart shaped, vegetarian, cheese crusted and normal!
In the afternoon we made friendship bracelets under the glorious sun. It was a day filled with fun, laughter and great friendships were formed.
What an adventure we had at the zoo!! 15 young children between the ages of 5-9 years old learnt about all the animals at the zoo. We went exploring through the wildlife, stroked an ostrich, looked at baby chimps and said a big HELLO to the giraffes! We had many great stops but the particular favourite stop was at the jeep and tutu bike! All in all, it was a great day filled with excitement and oohs and ahhs!
Cross Fit!!!!
Students from Taita, Naenae and St Patrick Colleges are participating in this intensive fitness and wellbeing programme and real progress has been made so far!
The work out this week focussed on:
Pairs: 200 bar pull ups; 20kg 4 students; 30kgs 4 students, followed by 100 hand release press ups!
The power clean was difficult for some and not so challenging for others. Sometimes technique beats muscle! Our students are loving it and the staff enjoy the challenge too!
Thanks to all our sponsors – our students are really getting lots out of it!
Personal Development Leadership Camp
Recently a group of young women from the Porirua Colleges were selected to participate in a Personal Development Programme.
The purpose of the programme was to provide a developmental experience for growing healthy relationships within themselves and others, leadership skills and encourage confidence, based on a holistic view of wellbeing.
With support from Mana Community Grants Foundation, the group were able to go on a three day camp in Taupo.
Using Adventure Based Learning, the group worked on team building, trust, communication and problem solving while at the same time experiencing new activities and gaining valuable skills facing and overcoming their fears.
In the evening the group would take the experiences of the day, reflect on them and discuss the fears and challenges that they faced and how they felt when they overcame them. Here is some of the feedback from the group – “M” – “being in the face of one of my biggest fears, I overcame my fear by keeping calm and trusting my leader to guide me”; “T” – “I overcame my fear by keeping my mind positive”; “B” – “If I push myself, I can do it – even if I am not comfortable with it”, “H” – I learned that my capabilities are not limited”.
Amazing Race Holiday Fun!!
In the October holidays Challenge 2000 and some young people saw the return of the Amazing Race, held around the Wellington CBD! Participants started out at the Botanical Gardens and worked their way down to Waitangi Park via Parliament, Frank Kitts Park, the Waterfront, Civic Square and Te Papa.
Along the way they had to complete a variety of challenges and activities.
It was an incredible day with participants managing to complete the entire race on foot!!
This is what some of the young people had to say:
“B”, 15, (Lower Hutt) – “Enjoyed getting around Wellington because I don’t live in the area”; “L”, 15, (Porirua) – “I liked the fact that it wasn’t just in one place (eg Botanical Gardens and Wellington CBD)”; “H”, 14, (Naenae) – “I enjoyed meeting new people and the food”
